Hive Skills Showcase – 9th March 2018

Hive members were great supporters of our Hive Skills Showcase event that was hosted at DACA last year and we would love to have your support again this year in what we hope will be an even bigger and better event.

Venue: Darwen Aldridge Community Academy

Date:  Friday 9th March 2018

Times: 8:45am – 3:15pm

In BwD we are supporting the national strategy to build a better Britain, fit for the future by investing in the skill development of young people to meet the changing needs of businesses.  We would like to invite you to help us on our journey by supporting schools from the area by showcasing the skills needed in your industry at the interactive Skills Showcase event on 9th March 2018.  The event has been arranged specifically to take place during National Careers Week (NCW).  NCW is a celebration of careers guidance in education across the UK. The aim is to provide a focus for careers guidance activity at an important stage in the academic calendar to help support young people in their career choices.  NCW encourages the bringing together of students, local employers and advisers through careers events and activities.

Why should your business take part?

The Hive Skills Showcase annual event aids in identifying the skill requirements your business will need in the coming years along with inspiring young people to consider a career in your sector. By attending the showcase you will raise the profile of your business to over 1000 young people from at least 10 different schools from across BwD.  The event does attract a significant number of businesses and is an ideal opportunity to network.

How can I get involved?

Participating businesses will be grouped into zones that represent different industries. Each zone will consist of up to 3 different businesses who will showcase the skills necessary in that sector.  If you wish to get involved you would need to be available for the whole day and be equipped to organise and deliver an activity that will allow young people to experience the skills required to do your job!

What will happen on the day?

Targeted at students form years 9 to 11 (13-16 year olds), of which there are about 1800 in BwD, the activity you plan should give students an insight into your industry and related careers.  Each business will deliver an interactive activity that will create a stimulating experience of their industry. Businesses will need to come prepared with activities that the students can participate in rather than just be given information.

Each session is an hour and a half and students will have been allocated 5 zones that they must visit in 15 minute windows.  The last 15 minutes of each session will be an opportunity for young people to visit any particular areas of interest that they haven’t yet seen for a Q&A with the businesses in the zones.   There will be a maximum 30 students in any one zone at a time divided between the businesses in that zone.

The first session will commence at 8.45am with the event closing at 3.15pm.  Lunch will be provided with an opportunity for networking between 12pm -12.45pm.

I want to take part, what next?

Please email to confirm your attendance.  Further details will be forwarded in the new year.
